There are many hidden eateries located along the Jalan Yap Kwan Seng so sometimes it just takes a little effort to try as much as you can to unearth a hidden gem, and 1919 Restaurant can be considered one of them.
Set in a very Peranakan/Nyonya deco, the restaurant is housed inside a double story bungalow, with ample seating for either small or big groups.
Simple menu and classic tea cup, most of the dishes have some influence of Nyonya and Peranakan, with a slight twist of Thai too.
Rice and noodle dishes are moderately price, and if you’re in a big group, you could always order a few dishes like in a Chinese restaurant.
Nyonya Fried Rice (RM9.90), one of the recommended dish in the menu. It’s a different kind of fried rice, with a tinge of sweetness and full of wok hei, with bits of fried onions, egg and chicken meat. The portion is good enough for 2 person (if you’re a small eater).
Salted Egg Chicken (RM16.90), a must order because it’s marinated so well with salted egg and fried to perfection. Each piece is crunchy and wrapped with generous portion of salted egg and goes well with either the Nyonya Fried Rice or even plain white rice.
Sadly, that’s the only 2 dishes that I tried that day but it’s definitely a good place to eat for family dinner or friends gathering. Maybe I should set the next makan-makan session there soon.
