Kita No Zen @ Gardens

May celebrated her 30th birthday almost 2 weeks back while we were at Taiwan, but since Kayden was not with us that time, I wanted to have another lunch so that the 3 of us could celebrate it together.

Have been deciding where to eat for the past few days, but since we wanted to look at some stuffs at Gardens, we decided to give this Kita no Zen located inside Hokkaido Ichiba a try. It’s a pretty new Japanese place located at the top floor of Gardens, beside Sony Centre.


Well at least there’s another place to queue up for lunch or dinner now at Gardens aside from Sushi Zanmai and Yuzu although the queue normally only happens at Sushi Zanmai.


Having said that, I think this place will also need to queue up during peak periods since this signage is located at the entrance.

The menu is pretty comprehensive from Lunch/Dinner Sets to things like Syabu Syabu, Yakuniku and a lot more.

I ordered the Sashimi Set which consist of an appetizer (cucumber salad with squid), assorted sashimi, chawamushi, miso soup and a plate of fruits. At RM30, I think the price is quite reasonable.


The sashimi is very fresh. However I would have prefer if I had been given butterfish instead of the squid.


May’s Sanma Teriyaki Zen (RM36) took a while to come, I think it’s mainly because the fish are being grilled to order. There’s a smaller plate of sashimi that comes with the set.


The Sanma fish (Pacific saury in English) is nicely done, however the chef didn’t remove the inner organs of the fish so ended up there’s quite a lot of wastage. Not sure if this is the proper way that this fish is being served because people like me and May will normally avoid fish that’s not properly clean.

The chawamushi is soft and smooth. However the only ingredients that’s being used are mushroom, chicken meat and a piece of fishcake, no gingko is found here. The appetizer is quite refreshing however it’s a pity that we can’t eat it because of the squids.


Next comes dessert. We ordered the Mango Crepe and Sesame Indulgence.


The Mango Crepe (RM9.80) is very good and as written in their menu, the crepe is made of a home made recipe with Hokkaido milk, The crepe is nice and soft and the mango sherbet is smooth and not too sweet.


The Sesame Indulgence (RM8.80) is equally good and is being served at from a minus 16 degrees celsius as indicated on the menu. The waffle basket compliments the ice cream very well.

Overall it’s a good very belated birthday lunch but I we will definitely visit this place again soon.

    Been wanting to give this place a try.. looks like their sashimi set is way cheaper than Yuzu. I think we paid RM68 for ours at Yuzu.

    They have both lunch sets and dinner sets, I think dinner sets are slightly pricier. Make sure be there early because there’s quite a crowd during lunch/dinner time.

    Sanma(s) in japan are supposed to be cooked whole without removing their organs. Its what they call the ‘Sanma’ taste.
