I started following the Asean Basketball League after knowing all about it from kyspeaks.com and that was almost 2 years back. Have always wanted to be attending a live game but with babies around, it meant that the plan have to be on hold, at least until this year. Maybankard 2 Cards is one of the sponsors for the Westport Malaysia Dragons and have been running some contest via facebook since the start of the year, and yours truly was fortunate enough to win a pair of tickets to watch the Dragons host the Singapore Slingers today.
With a ticket to spare, I invited Sherlin along since she’s the only person that have shown interest in the ABL since 2 years back. After collecting the tickets, we were invited to the Premium Lounger, where there’s free flow of alcoholic drinks and foods, worth every penny if you’re paying RM250 for a courtside ticket!
The food was pretty alright, but since it’s free, what’s more to ask for right?
With a good hour to spare after having the free meals, we make a move up to the court and waited for the players to show up for warming up. The Westport Malaysia Dragons comprises majority of local players with a few imports from the Philippines and US. The team have been doing pretty well this season, currently at 3rd place with after an impressive start to the season and having the best offense at the entire league.
Always like this kind of digitalize scoreboard, which we don’t find often here. Before the tip off, there’s plenty of activities around especially from the sponsors. And then after that, the opening act by the Dragonettes, the team’s official cheerleading team.
The game tip off at 3PM and the Dragons dominated the entire 1st quarter, racing to a 12 point run before finishing the quarter at 21-7.
The 2nd quarter was much more tighter but the 2 US imports Wade and Williams were playing so well that the 1st half ended 47 to 34. Half time approaches and again there’s a number of activities again like the BMW Malaysia Open and the Maybankard 1 Million Treatspoints contest. I did try my hand shooting from the half way line but all I got was ‘airball’. Well maybe better luck next time!
The 3rd quarter was a pretty close affair between the Slingers and the Dragons, there was a point where the lead was only cut to 10, before Wade and Williams stamped back some authorities to the score line by protecting the lead to 66 over the Slingers 47.
The game ended 86 to 71 with Brian Williams scoring a double-double, and Tiras Wade the top scorer for the Dragons with 34 points!
The official mascot, the Dragon making his round all around the court!
I could resist getting some official merchandise since I’m at the Dragon’s Den so I got this,
Official Home Kit with custom printing at 40% off.
Overall, it’s a very nice experience and I’m already planning to make it to another home game in the near future since the season will run all the way till June (and hopefully more of my friends will be interested by that time) and there’s not much sporting events in KL, aside from the Malaysia Super League which is pretty crappy so at least there’s one sport that we are doing well and that is the ABL. We have our very own New York Knicks in our backyard, so what we need now is maybe Super Lin?
